Student Success and Engagement

Advising

All MTC students have an academic advisor who provides academic and career guidance. Your advisor can help you create an academic plan, register for classes, and keep you on track to graduate.  Advisors can also answer questions about your area of study and future career, help you transition to college, explain MTC’s policies and procedures, provide support for academic and personal challenges, connect you with other services at MTC and in the community, as well as help with strategies to help you be successful.

Advising Office

Most students will be assigned to an Academic Advisor in the Advising and Disability Services Office, which is part of the Department of Student Success and Engagement.

Laura Emerick – Director of Advising

Mandy Knight – Nursing, Medical Lab Science, Phlebotomy, Surgical Technology, Arts & Sciences (transfer degrees)

Brandy Page – Health Information Technology, Medical Assisting, Occupational Therapy Assisting, Physical Therapy Assisting, Sonography, Radiologic Technology

Amanda Robinson – Business, Criminal Justice, Engineering, Information Technology

The Advising staff offices are currently located in the faculty office area of Bryson Hall (161-169) while the building is undergoing renovations.  We will hopefully move into our new space by the end of fall semester.  The “front desk”/check-in area is located in 161B.

Faculty Advisors

Students who have been accepted to a limited enrollment program (Nursing & Allied Health, Social Work & Addictions, and Marion Law Enforcement Academy) will be assigned to their Program Director or a Faculty Advisor in their program of study at the time of admission.  If you need to schedule an appointment with your Faculty Advisor, please contact them directly.  Students not yet accepted will be assigned to the Academic Advisor listed above until they apply to the program and have been accepted.

When Do I Need to Meet With My Advisor?

You may meet with your advisor as often as you want, but at minimum, you are required to meet with your advisor:

  • To register for your first semester classes (new students and returning students who have not attended the last three semesters)
  • To register for classes if you have less than 12 credits completed
  • If you are placed on academic warning or probation because of your GPA
  • During the term before you graduate (approximately 45 credits) to petition to graduate and review your academic degree audit

How do I schedule an appointment?

  • If you are assigned to an Academic Advisor in the Advising and Disability Services Office, please call 740-386-4200, email advising@mtc.edu, stop by Bryson Hall 161B, or schedule online in My Plan.

I’m a new student at MTC.  What do I need to do to register for classes?

After you have been accepted to the college, your next step is to set up a new student advising appointment with your Academic Advisor.  This initial meeting can be held in person or via Zoom; you should allow 45-60 minutes for your first appointment.

You should send your high school and/or college transcripts to MTC prior to meeting with your Academic Advisor so we have this information available during the meeting.

Some students may need to complete placement testing prior to their appointment; we can arrange this to be on the same day as your new student appointment or on a day prior to your appointment.  Recent (within 3-5 years) ACT scores, high school coursework, and transfer college coursework are also used for placement:

  • If you graduated high school and/or have an ACT score within the last 3 years, you may not need to do any placement testing if you are satisfied with your ACT score and grades. Your Academic Advisor can discuss your options with you.
  • If you graduated high school or have ACT scores within 5 years (but more than 3 years), you will need to take placement testing for math but may not need to do placement testing for reading or writing.
  • If you graduated high school more than 5 years ago, you will need to take placement testing for math, reading, writing, and technology unless they have previous college coursework.
  • Health majors may also need to take a science placement test if they graduated high school more than 5 years ago unless they have college-level biology, chemistry, anatomy, or related coursework or applicable licensure in a related field. Talk to your Academic Advisor for more details.

After you have completed your new student appointment and registered for classes, you will be invited to New Student Orientation.  New Student Orientation is required for all degree and certificate seeking students, including transfer students and former CCP students.  For more information, visit: https://www.mtc.edu/future-students/orientation/
